Jobs, Growth, and Communities: Canada’s Food Economy
Canada’s food economy is one of the nation’s greatest strategic assets, powered by more than 2.36 million Canadians — 11.4% of the workforce — across agriculture, manufacturing, distribution, retail, and foodservice. Together, they support over 397,000 establishments and generate more than $143 billion in GDP, underpinning Canada’s prosperity, food security, and economic sovereignty. With more than 300,000 new hires needed by 2030, investing in workforce development and human capital is essential to strengthening the food system and securing the country’s economic future.
