Report Introduction

This report is part of a series of 14 regional studies providing detailed labour market information (LMI) for Canada’s meat processing industry. It supports a broader study by Food Processing Skills Canada, Employment and Social Development Canada, and partners titled Securing Canada’s Meat Workforce. The study aims to identify human resource challenges and compile best practices to help employers meet current and future labour demands. Fourteen regions across Canada, including Langley Region in British Columbia, were selected based on processing activity and workforce proportion. The report includes overviews of Langley and British Columbia’s meat processing sectors, an analysis of the region’s labour supply and demand, and highlights HR challenges alongside innovative solutions that employers and communities are using to address workforce issues.

Insights in This Report:

Meat processing in the Langley region consists of slaughtering, processing and rendering of mostly poultry, pork and some beef.

Regional labour market analysis suggests that after accounting for labour requirements in other sectors, regional labour supply is well above projected meat processing employment demands.

Regional meat processing employment is expected to rise from 2,800 workers in 2017 to over 2,900 by 2020 and nearly 3,500 by 2030.
