The food and beverage processing industry is te largest manufacturing sector in Canada. Approximately 6,500 establishments in this sector employ approximately 250,000 workers.
Improved technology is helping firms increase productivity and meet the needs of consumers, which is leading to a trend of fewer employees and fewer establishments within the industry.
Concentration in both the retail and food distribution sectors are having an impact n industry profitability, as small firms are finding it more difficult to place their production grocer store shelves and distributors are able to charge more for their services.
