A variety of our all-time favorite snacks and foods fit into the all-encompassing “other food manufacturing” sector from chips and nuts, to coffee, tea, spices and seasonings, this sector has got you covered! Truth be told, many of the newest product innovations are diverse and don’t fit into the classic food categories and as a result are represented here – so by default this subsector has become the largest as it represents so many different types of products.

Other Food Manufacturing

Canadians have diverse palates and are hungry for authentic tastes from cuisines around the globe. In the last few years, our markets have boomed with new spices, flavourings, and sauces that allow consumers to make their own creations at home!

Here’s some areas of interest:

Snack Food Manufacturing:

Canadians LOVE their snack foods, in fact it’s one of the industry’s largest trends! (or fastest growing sectors) Popcorn, pretzels, chips, trail mixes, chips, corn chips, cheese puffs, pork rinds, etc. You’ll find most on-the-go snacks here like hummus and dip, guacamole and crackers, etc. Most things that are mixed

Nut Manufacturing:

Yes, nuts have their own special section. Included is drying, roasting, salting, cooking and canning nuts and other seeds. Everyone’s favorite peanut butter and all other nut/ seed butters fit here, as well as any nut or seed-based snacks (like sesame snacks)! Nuts and seeds are used in a wide array of international cuisines which are in huge demand in Canada (one of our top consumer trends), examples include tahini made from sesame seeds and pistachios in desserts, flavourings and more!

Coffee & Tea:

Coffee & Tea: As coffee and teas are dried and/ or roasted plants (very similar to nuts when you think about it), they don’t belong in the beverage section, but right here in the other foods section. Grown in fields, tea and coffee plant matter are transported to factories and dried, rolled, roasted, cooked, and sometimes grinded and packaged for consumers. Coffees and Teas are also derived into extracts, syrups, flavourings, and essences uses as an ingredient in numerous products and industries.

Flavourings & Syrups:

Many beverage companies use proprietary concentrates of flavouring and syrups to make their final products, an example of this would be Pepsi or Coke. They actually perform two different types of manufacturing, one side that makes the flavouring syrup and the other side that dilutes & combines the syrups into the drinkable beverage (which falls in the beverage subsector). This subsector focuses on the flavourings, syrups, pastes and powders that are used to flavour beverages, mostly soft drinks, but it also includes juices, electrolyte drinks and more!

Seasonings & Dressings:

A category for all your favourite condiments, spices and toppings! In this subsector you’ll find mustard production, mustard powder, mayonnaise, salad dressings, mal & vinegars, horseradish, Worcestershire sauces, BBQ sauces, tartar sauce, salt & pepper, spice blends, dips, salad dressings and powder mixes like taco seasoning and gravies. Achieving the right flavour for your home-cooked dishes has never been easier with tons of innovations in the Seasonings & Dressings subsector. Think of all the prepackaged spices and sauces that have hit the shelves over the last decade bringing us the best international flavour profiles from all types of cuisines such as butter chicken sauces, Jamaican jerk flavouring, Thai chilli seasons, just to name a few. Not only is this an area with huge consumer demand, but it’s also an area with many entrepreneurs!

All other food Manufacturing:

This is a catch-all group for products that don’t seem to fit elsewhere in the subsector classifications, but you may find some of the foods in here surprising like baking powder, yeast or ready-to-go lunch kits. These foods seem like they should fit in other categories but don’t always as they mix together a few different subsectors and sometimes require different levels of food safety practices. For example Coleslaw is in the “all other food manufacturing” because it’s both a vegetable and it’s got a sauce mix – but it’s also not a canned product. Therefore, foods that don’t distinctly fit into other categories tend to fall here which means they might require some special unique considerations for processing too, examples are: eggs, tofu, gelatin, shredded coconut, honey, jelly, syrup, mixed frozen dinners, etc. You’ll even find pizza in this category it’s got some of all the different sectors – dough, cheese, sauce, vegetables, spices.
