Butchers (retail and wholesale) work primarily in the retail trade industry, accounting for almost 90% of the workforce. The wholesale industry (6.8%) accounts for the second-highest share of the butcher workforce. Less than 1% of butchers (retail and wholesale) in Canada work in the food manufacturing industry.

Industrial butchers work primarily in the manufacturing industry, accounting for 86.0% of the workforce. Approximately 8 in 10 industrial butchers work in the food and beverage manufacturing industry. The retail trade industry has the second-highest share (7.1%) of the industrial butcher workforce, followed by the agriculture forestry, fishing and hunting industry (3.0%).

Meat cutters and fishmongers work predominantly in the retail trade industry, accounting for 94.2% of the workforce. The wholesale trade industry has the second-highest share (2.3%) of the meat cutter and fishmonger workforce. Approximately 1% of meat cutters and fishmongers in Canada work in the food manufacturing industry.

Bakers work in a variety of sectors across Canada. The largest industry employer is retail trade, comprising 38.0% of the workforce. The manufacturing industry accounts for the second highest share of the baker workforce (33.9%), followed by the accommodation and food services industry (23.8%). A third (33.6%) of bakers in Canada work directly in the food and beverage manufacturing sector.

Chefs work primarily in the accommodation and food services industry, accounting for 80.3% of the workforce. The health care and social assistance industry (5.4%) accounts for the second highest share of the chef workforce. Just over 2% of Canada’s chefs work in the food and beverage manufacturing industry.

Material handlers work primarily in the transportation and warehousing industry, accounting for 26.5% of the workforce. The manufacturing industry has the second-highest share (23.6%), followed by the retail trade (19.2%) industry. Approximately 5% of material handlers in Canada work in the food and beverage manufacturing industry.

Food and beverage processing labourers in Canada work primarily in the manufacturing industry, accounting for 71.6% of the workforce. Just under two-thirds (62.2%) of the workforce is concentrated in the food and beverage manufacturing industry. The wholesale and trade industry has the second-highest share (8.9%) of the food and beverage processing labourer workforce, followed closely by retail trade at 6.6%.

Aquaculture and marine harvest labourers work primarily in the agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting industry, accounting for 88.8% of the workforce. The manufacturing industry accounts for the second highest share (7.3%) of the aquaculture and marine harvest labourer workforce. Approximately 7% of the workforce is concentrated in the food manufacturing sector

Public and environmental health and safety professionals work primarily in the public administration industry, accounting for 32.9% of the workforce. The healthcare and social assistance industry has the second-highest share (14.7%) of the public and environmental health and safety professional workforce. The ‘other’ category, comprising the remaining 15 industries not listed in Figure 1, accounts for a significant share (26.2%) of the workforce. Nearly 4% of Canada’s public and environmental health and safety professionals work in the food and beverage manufacturing industry.

Food service supervisors work primarily in the accommodation and food services industry, accounting for 70.9% of the workforce. The manufacturing industry has the second-highest share of food service supervisors (6.2%). Just under 2% of food service supervisors in Canada work in the food and beverage manufacturing industry.

Food and beverage processing supervisors work primarily in the manufacturing industry, accounting for 78.8% of the workforce. Approximately 70% of Canada’s food and beverage processing supervisors work in the food and beverage manufacturing industry. The remaining supervisors work across various segments of the economy, with the most significant industries being wholesale trade (6.6%) and agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting (4.9%).

Testers and graders in food and beverage processing work primarily in the manufacturing industry, accounting for 65.2% of the workforce. Approximately 60% of Canada’s testers work in the food and beverage manufacturing industry. The remaining testers and graders in food and beverage processing work across various segments of the economy, with the most significant industries being agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting (12.5%) and wholesale trade (10.5%).

Fish and seafood plant workers work primarily in the manufacturing industry, which accounts for 77.9% of the workforce. The agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting industry (10.8%) has the second-highest share of the fish and seafood plant worker workforce, followed by wholesale trade (5.3%). Three-quarters (75.9%) of the workforce is concentrated in the food manufacturing sector.
