GRAIN & OILSEED MILLING

Flours and oils come from grinding and pressing grains, seeds and vegetables into products we can use or are sold as ingredients to other sectors. This sub-sector manufactures flour, rice, corn, starches, breakfast cereal, vegetable fats and oilseeds.

Grain & Oilseed Milling

Making flours and oils come from grinding and pressing grains, seeds and vegetables into products we can use. Most of the items manufactured in this subsector are sold as ingredients to make other products, and a smaller number of companies are selling directly to consumers such as flour and breakfast cereal! This means you may not be familiar with many of the businesses in this sector as they mainly sell to other companies instead of consumers.

This sector also includes rice milling, cleaning and polishing – rice is the base for a whole bunch of stuff!

Here’s some areas of interest:

Flour & Rice Milling

Milling We know who makes the bread, but who makes the flour? That’s right, all types of flour are made in the grain & oilseed sector, we’re talking about wheat flour, rice flour, vegetable flour, buckwheat, durum, graham, barley, and more.

Malt & Starches

We all know and love malt. Unsurprisingly, our biggest use of malt is in beer and other alcoholic beverages. But you’d probably be surprised to hear that malt extracts are in a number of food products adding flavour and increasing enzyme activity – you’ll find it in flour, vinegar, breakfast cereal, baby foods, etc.

Starch is a friend in the kitchen with an enormous amount of uses – sauces, stir-fries, in baking, etc. There are a number of different starches products made in Canada.

Corn Milling

As much as we don’t like to admit it, there’s a lot of great stuff made from corn. Canada has a great environment for growing corn, making it a staple of our economy.

You may not have even known all the items made from wet corn milling, such as: corn oil, dextrin, corn syrup, crude oil, corn-based sweeteners like fructose and glucose, margarine and other cooking oils, high fructose corn syrup, various starches, and tapioca to name a few.

Oilseed Processing & Fat and Oil Manufacturing

Oil processing is not an easy task, it’s definitely something that people tend not to take up in their home kitchens! These days, big machines are used to grind, extract, and purify oils and fats into products you can use. Which means that you’ll find careers working with highly sophisticated equipment and technologies. Some of the products made in this sector include: canola oil, palm-kernel oil, peanut oil, vegetable oil and shortenings, cottonseed oil, sunflower seed, linseed, rapeseed, safflower, flaxseed, coconut, castor, olive, cottonseed, lecithin, and soybean oil.
